The client and the challenge

A restaurant people search for by occasion

The Colonel's Club is an upscale restaurant, piano bar and private event venue in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, led by Chef Chris Motto of Hell's Kitchen. It serves Sunday brunch, happy hour and fine dining, hosts rehearsal dinners and corporate events, and runs a cocktail lounge with live piano.

That range is the challenge. Every one of those occasions is a different search, and the club was competing with every restaurant, bar and venue in Baton Rouge on each of them. In April the site ranked for 295 keywords.

The goal was to make The Colonel's Club the answer when Baton Rouge searches for brunch, a piano bar, happy hour or a place to hold a rehearsal dinner, and to turn that visibility into calls.

Occasions and searches

Six occasions, six different searches

  • Sunday brunch“best Sunday brunch Baton Rouge”
  • Happy hour“happy hour Baton Rouge”
  • Fine dining and lunch“lunch Baton Rouge”
  • Piano bar and cocktail lounge“piano bar Baton Rouge”
  • Rehearsal dinners“rehearsal dinner venue Baton Rouge”
  • Corporate events“corporate events Baton Rouge”

Each occasion is its own search, and each one needs its own answer.

The approach

What the search presence looks like now

Local SEO for a restaurant is not one keyword. It is a set of occasions, each with its own page, its own search and its own spot in the map results.

01

Match every occasion to the searches behind it

People do not search for a restaurant by name until they know it. They search for the occasion: brunch on Sunday, happy hour after work, a piano bar, a venue for a rehearsal dinner or a corporate event. The rankings below are built on those searches, the ones that put people in seats.

02

Give each occasion a page that can rank

A single homepage cannot rank for brunch, happy hour, lunch and private events at once. The pages bringing in traffic today are the homepage, the menu, a happy hour page, a lunch page, a page on Chef Chris Motto and a blog post on the best Sunday brunch in Baton Rouge.

03

Compete for the Map Pack, not only the blue links

For a restaurant the map results are where the decision happens. “Piano bar Baton Rouge” now ranks #1 in organic results and #2 in the Map Pack, so the club shows up twice on the same search.

04

Measure calls, AI mentions and traffic, not only rankings

The report pulls Google Analytics, Ahrefs, DataForSEO and our Zoesi dashboard together: keywords ranked, calls, where visitors came from, and how often Google AI mentions the club. That is how we know organic search is the #1 traffic source.

For your business

What any business with several reasons to be hired can copy

You do not need a celebrity chef for this to work. Any business with more than one reason to be hired can use the same playbook.

01

List the occasions, not just the service

A restaurant sells brunch, happy hour and private events. A contractor sells repairs, replacements and emergency calls. Each one is a separate search and deserves a separate page.

02

Win the map and the page below it

Ranking #1 organically and #2 in the Map Pack for the same search puts you on screen twice. Our local SEO work treats the Map Pack as its own target.

03

Judge SEO by the phone

Keywords matter because calls follow them. The Colonel's Club took 608 calls in August. That number matters more than any ranking, and it is how we report on SEO for every client.
